Helping Others

As I watch the devastation left behind by Superstorm Sandy on the television, I am left feeling helpless to help our friends and family in the northeast.  This is usually a time when folks are gearing up for the holiday season, which to many also means the giving season.  Beyond gifts to family and friends, the holidays also bring seemingly endless opportunities to give to others less fortunate.  One of my favorite things about quilting is the community and generosity of quilters.  To help you help others, I would like to extend a discount code for 25% off all items store-wide at MyFabricFriend.com.  The hope is that you will use at least a portion of your purchase to help someone in need.  The discount code is: GIVE25 and is active until November 15th.
If you need inspiration, two of my favorite places to browse for free projects are the Moda Bakeshop (click here) and Riley Blake's YouTube videos (click here).

Charm Pack Cross Quilt

I created the cross (aka plus) quilt shown below for our family pastor.  He is very tall and has a deep voice so I wanted a "manly" fabric that would fit his personality.  Given his profession, I thought a cross quilt would be perfect.  To help cut down on the fabric cutting, I used white solid charm packs to make things go a bit faster.  If anyone is interested, I have the pattern I used and would be happy to post it.  Just leave me a comment, and I would be happy to oblige :-)  I thought this would also look great with crosses/pluses made with a variety of fabrics instead of just one fabric like I did with the brown.  Maybe next time.  Could be a great stash buster!!

Jelly Roll Quilt

I made this quilt for my Mom's 65th birthday (hope she doesn't mind me broadcasting her age!). She looks MUCH younger than she is, so this will keep her honest :-). I just sewed four Kate Spain Good Fortune Jelly Roll strips together and cut them into triangles along the 45 degree angle.  I wanted a sort of pinwheel feel, so I arranged my triangles accordingly. I also wanted a larger quilt since she has two hounds to keep warm under there with her, so I added some sashing and voila! One birthday present for Mom. She may have to fight little Lucy for it though!
